Engineered hardwood, built for the real world
Engineered hardwood puts a genuine wood wear layer on top of a plywood core built to stay dimensionally stable. It looks and feels like solid hardwood underfoot, but it won't cup, gap, or buckle the way solid wood can when humidity swings - which matters here, where winter air inside a heated home can run drier than a desert and summer brings its own swing back the other way. That stability is why we point clients toward engineered for basements, slab-on-grade homes, kitchens, and rooms with radiant heat.
Artisan Custom Flooring stocks engineered hardwood from Lauzon, Mirage, Mercier, Kahrs, Coswick, Shaw, and Armstrong - the same lines designers spec on higher-end builds.

The case for engineered over solid
Engineered hardwood delivers most of what people love about solid wood without the climate sensitivity that comes with it.
- Stable over concrete slabs and radiant heat systems
- Available in wider planks (up to 9") than solid wood typically allows
- Factory-finished with a durable aluminum-oxide topcoat
- Installed floating, glue-down, or nail-down, whichever your subfloor calls for
- Can typically be refinished once or twice, depending on wear-layer thickness

Species, widths, and finish
European and American oak make up most of our engineered inventory, but maple, walnut, hickory, and a handful of exotic species are all available. Plank widths range from a traditional 3" up to a 9" designer board. Finish options run from a clean matte to wire-brushed, hand-scraped, fumed, and reactive-stained European looks.

Installation
We assess your subfloor before recommending anything - moisture testing on concrete, joist checks on plywood, flatness readings throughout. From there we specify floating, glue-down, or nail-down, whichever will actually perform. Every quote covers baseboard removal and reinstall, transitions into adjoining rooms, and hauling off your existing floor.

Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions
If the wear layer runs 3mm or thicker, yes, once or twice over its life. Thinner wear layers (1-2mm) do better with a screen-and-recoat instead of a full sand.
Water-resistant, not waterproof. It shrugs off a spill far better than solid wood does, but standing water from something like a dishwasher leak still needs to be cleaned up right away.
That's one of its main selling points. We follow the manufacturer's subfloor temperature and acclimation guidelines closely to keep the boards from gapping.
Floating goes in faster and is easier to repair down the line. Glue-down feels more solid and runs quieter underfoot. Over concrete we typically default to glue-down; over plywood, either works well.
