Most worn hardwood doesn't need to be torn out - it needs to be refinished. This is where Artisan Custom Flooring got its start, and it's still the job we get asked about most. We use 99% dustless sanding, custom staining, and modern water-based polyurethane finishes that cure in days instead of weeks.
We refinish solid hardwood, engineered hardwood with at least a 3mm wear layer, and parquet throughout The Denver Metro Area. Refinishing typically runs 30% to 50% of a full replacement while keeping the grain, patina, and character of the floor you already own.
Three levels of refinishing
Not every floor needs to be sanded down to bare wood. We'll assess yours and recommend the lightest, fastest, most affordable option that will actually fix the problem.
- Recoat / screen-and-coat - a light surface refresh for floors already in decent shape. 1-2 days, no stain change.
- Buff-and-coat (sandless) - removes light scratches and surface wear. 2-3 days, no stain change, minimal dust.
- Full sanding and refinish - clears deep scratches, gouges, water marks, and old finish, and opens the door to a full stain change. 3-5 days.
Stain and finish choices
Once a floor is sanded down to raw wood, the stain options open up - whitewashed, natural, grey, fumed, classic mid-tone oak, or a deep espresso. We bring sample boards stained in your own wood species so you're choosing under your home's actual lighting. Top coats range from matte to satin to semi-gloss, in either water-based (low odor, fast cure) or oil-based polyurethane.
A genuinely dustless process
Our sanders run connected to commercial HEPA vacuums that capture nearly all the dust as it's generated, and we add plastic containment between rooms on top of that. The mess most people associate with refinishing basically doesn't happen. You can stay in the house through the project - we just section off whatever rooms are being worked on that day.
Hardwood Refinishing - frequently asked questions
Solid hardwood can typically handle 5 to 7 refinishings over its life. Engineered hardwood with a 3mm-plus wear layer can usually be refinished once or twice. We check wear-layer thickness during the in-home assessment.
Water-based polyurethane is walkable in 4 to 6 hours and fully cured within about 7 days. Oil-based takes roughly 24 hours before light foot traffic and 14 to 30 days to fully cure. We build the schedule around your household.
Surface water marks generally sand out completely. Deep black staining, where water sat for weeks, may call for board replacement before we refinish. We assess this on-site.
Yes - full sanding takes the floor down to raw wood, and from there we can stain it any modern color, including grey, whitewash, espresso, or a fumed European look. We'll test stain samples on your actual floor before committing to one.
