The Denver Metro Area's hardwood specialists

Hardwood is what Artisan Custom Flooring was built around. Owner Nate Phillips has spent more than 20 years in the trade, and hardwood installation and dustless refinishing remain the crew's core specialty even as we've grown into a full-service flooring company. We supply and install solid hardwood, engineered hardwood, and custom parquet from major mills - Lauzon, Mirage, Mercier, Bruce, Kahrs, Coswick, Shaw, Armstrong, and others.

Buying direct from those mills means you get manufacturer pricing on the same product a big-box store sells at retail markup, and our own crew - not a rotating cast of subs - handles removal, subfloor prep, installation, staining, and finishing.

Solid or engineered - what fits your home

Both are genuine wood. The construction is what's different, and Denver's climate is a real factor in the decision - our winters run bone-dry with heated air indoors, and that swing in humidity is exactly what pushes wood to expand and contract.

  • Solid hardwood - a 3/4" plank of solid wood, nailed down, refinishable 5 to 7 times over its life. Works best over a plywood subfloor on main or upper levels.
  • Engineered hardwood - a real-wood wear layer bonded to a stable plywood core, so it resists the humidity swings solid wood can't. The right call over concrete, below grade, or with radiant heat.
  • Wide plank (5"-7") - a current, open look, available in either construction.
  • Parquet - chevron, herringbone, custom inlay work, done in solid or engineered.

Species and stain

Red and white oak make up the majority of what we install - durable, they take stain evenly, and they only look better with age. Maple gives a tighter, more uniform grain. Hickory is the hardest domestic species and holds up well in an active household. Walnut and cherry bring a darker, richer tone for more formal rooms.

Stains range from a natural blonde to whitewashed, grey, fumed, and a deep espresso. We bring actual sample boards to your home so you're choosing a stain on real wood under your own lighting, not off a printed swatch.

Installation and refinishing, done in-house

We install nail-down, glue-down, and floating hardwood depending on your subfloor, and every job includes moisture testing, subfloor leveling, and removing and resetting baseboards. If your existing hardwood just needs new life instead of replacement, our refinishing crew runs dustless sanding, custom staining, and water-based polyurethane finishes that cure in days.

Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions

Most whole-home jobs run 2 to 4 days. If we're refinishing existing hardwood alongside a new install, add another 3 to 5 days for sanding, staining, and finish cure.

Engineered hardwood handles both well - the plywood core stays stable through humidity shifts that would move solid wood. We don't recommend solid hardwood in either spot.

A well-installed solid floor can run 80 to 100 years and take 5 to 7 refinishings along the way. Engineered hardwood typically runs 30 to 50 years with one or two refinishes possible depending on wear-layer thickness.

We bring in sample boards in your species and stain and try to land within a shade. For a true seamless blend, we can refinish the existing floor at the same time so the whole thing reads as one continuous surface.
