How to actually compare LVP products
Three specs tell you almost everything worth knowing about an LVP product - wear layer, core construction, and total thickness. We'll walk through each during your consultation.
- Wear layer 12-20 mil - fine for light residential traffic like rentals or bedrooms
- Wear layer 22 mil - our default for a whole-home install
- Wear layer 28-30 mil - built for heavy residential or commercial use
- SPC core (stone polymer composite) - rigid and won't telegraph a bumpy subfloor
- WPC core (wood polymer composite) - a softer, warmer feel underfoot
- Total thickness 5mm-8mm - the thicker end is quieter and more forgiving of an imperfect subfloor
Click-lock or glue-down
Click-lock LVP floats over the subfloor, installs quickly, and is simple to repair if a plank ever gets damaged. Glue-down LVP feels more solid and runs quieter underfoot, which makes it the better call for large open floor plans and busy commercial spaces. We install both and will recommend one based on your subfloor and room layout.
Installation
The gap between a great LVP install and a mediocre one comes down to subfloor prep. We level out dips, fill low spots, and use whatever underlayment the manufacturer requires. Our crews also handle custom-milled stair nosings when a factory match isn't available, baseboard removal and reinstall, and full disposal of your old floor.

It's one of the strongest basement options available - waterproof, unaffected by a concrete subfloor, and far warmer to walk on than tile.
The wear layer resists scratching well, but it's not indestructible. Dog claws and dragged furniture can mark up a lower-grade product, so we'll usually recommend at least a 20-mil wear layer for households with larger dogs.
With a 22-mil or thicker wear layer, plan on 20 to 25 years in a typical home. Commercial-rated LVP can stretch to 25 to 30 years.
