Hardwood stair installation in The Denver Metro Area
A staircase gets more daily use, and more attention from guests, than almost any other surface in a home. Artisan Custom Flooring designs and builds hardwood staircases that feel solid, match the rest of your floor, and hold up to years of foot traffic without complaint.
It's all handled in one trip: pulling out old carpet or worn treads, leveling the substructure underneath, milling nosings to match your existing hardwood, setting treads and risers, and finishing with a low-VOC sealer. One crew, one schedule, one warranty covering the whole job.

Solid or engineered treads
Solid oak, maple, and hickory treads remain the standard for a reason - they can be sanded and refinished multiple times, and a properly built solid tread will outlast a 30-year mortgage without much trouble.
Engineered treads make sense when you're matching an existing engineered floor or building over a concrete slab. They stay dimensionally stable, resist squeaking, and finish out looking identical to solid wood once installed.
- Red oak, white oak, maple, hickory, and walnut, all kept in stock
- Custom stain matched to your existing floor, with free sample boards
- Open-end, boxed, curved, and winding staircase construction
- In-house milled nosings when the manufacturer doesn't offer a match

What installation actually looks like
Day one is demo and prep - pulling out existing carpet, treads, or tile, clearing debris out of the stairwell, and shimming any loose stringers so the new staircase stays quiet. Day two is setting treads, risers, and nosings with construction adhesive and finish nails, with no fasteners left visible. Day three is stain (if you're changing color) and three coats of polyurethane, followed by a final detail pass.

Matching your stairs to the rest of the floor
Most homeowners want their staircase to look like a continuation of the main floor rather than its own separate project. We pull from the same stain batch used on your hardwood flooring or refinishing job and match the sheen so the stairs blend rather than stand out. If a deliberate contrast is what you're after - dark treads against painted white risers, for example - we'll mock it up on a sample board before we order a single piece of material.

Hardwood Stairs - frequently asked questions
Yes - we pull the carpet, pad, staples, and tack strip, then check the treads underneath. Solid treads in good shape get built on top of; particleboard or damaged treads get replaced outright as part of the job.
A standard 14-stair job runs 2 to 3 days - demo, then install, then finish. You can use the stairs the next morning, with a full cure around 7 days out.
That's the goal on nearly every job. We brush stain samples onto the same wood species right in your home so you're picking the real color, not a printed swatch.
No more than any other hard surface finished the same way. We use a matte or satin polyurethane with a low-slip rating, and we can add discreet anti-slip strips under the nosing for households with pets or small kids.
