Carpeted stair installation in The Denver Metro Area

Stairs take more abuse than any other surface in the house, and they're the one place where a slip actually matters. A properly installed carpet runner or wall-to-wall stair carpet quiets footsteps, softens a fall, and covers up wear that would show immediately on a hard surface.

Artisan Custom Flooring has carpeted staircases all over The Denver Metro Area - layout, padding, tackless strip, and the finishing touches (waterfall or Hollywood wrap, French cap nosings, custom binding) that make every stair line up with no visible seam.

Wall-to-wall or a runner?

Wall-to-wall carpet covers the full tread and riser. It's the quietest, warmest option and the easiest to keep looking good since there's no exposed wood edge to scuff.

A runner leaves wood showing on either side of the staircase and works well with painted risers or open balusters. Most runners run 27" to 32" wide, custom-bound in a tape that matches or contrasts with the carpet.

  • Low-pile nylon for stairs that see the most daily traffic
  • Wool or wool-blend runners for a premium look with natural stain resistance
  • Solution-dyed polyester for households with pets and kids
  • Custom binding in 30-plus colors to match your trim

Why some homeowners choose carpet over hardwood on stairs

Hardwood stairs are striking, but they're slick in socks, loud underfoot, and unforgiving to a dropped phone. A quality carpet cuts a meaningful amount of impact noise, gives kids and older family members a softer landing, and takes the edge off a barefoot trip down in January when the floors are cold. For dogs that struggle with traction on hardwood, carpeted stairs solve the problem outright.

How we install stair carpet

We pull the old carpet, pad, staples, and tack strip and check the wood underneath before anything new goes down - loose treads get re-screwed, squeaks get glued. Fresh 8-pound rebond pad and new tackless strips go in on every tread and riser, and we stretch the carpet with a power stretcher (not just a knee kicker) so it holds tight for years. Seams are heat-bonded, with nothing fraying at the nosing.

Carpet Stairs - frequently asked questions

Low-pile nylon and solution-dyed polyester. Both stand up to the constant friction stairs see day after day. A deep, plush pile looks great in a bedroom but crushes fast at the nosing.

It hides them from view, but we fix the actual cause first - every loose tread gets re-screwed and any open joints get glued before we lay new carpet over the top.

As long as the treads are structurally sound, yes. We use a method that doesn't damage the wood, so switching back to bare hardwood later is still an option.

It wears well and looks sharp, but avoid it if you have cats - the loops are an easy target for claws.
