Why vinyl works so well on stairs

Vinyl is the only stair material that's fully waterproof, scratch-resistant, and quiet at the same time. For homes with kids, pets, or basement stairs that see snowmelt and grocery bags every day through a Colorado winter, it holds up better than hardwood or carpet without much visible wear.

Artisan Custom Flooring installs LVP stairs throughout The Denver Metro Area using the same plank going into the adjoining floor, so the staircase reads as one continuous surface rather than a separate project.

Why vinyl works so well on stairs

Nosings - the detail that makes or breaks the job

Most LVP manufacturers don't produce a matching stair nosing, which is why so many DIY vinyl stair projects look unfinished at the front edge. We handle it two ways - a factory-color nosing when one exists, or a custom nosing milled in-house from the same plank when it doesn't. Either way, the tread edge matches exactly, with no contrast strip and no aluminum trim.

  • 20 mil and 30 mil wear layers rated for commercial-level traffic
  • A slip-resistant, micro-textured surface
  • Click-lock and glue-down installation, depending on the staircase
  • Custom-milled nosings for any LVP brand we carry

Installation built to hold up

Vinyl stair jobs fail in one of two ways - poor adhesion at the nosing, or an unprepared substrate that squeaks underfoot. We use polyurethane construction adhesive along with hidden mechanical fasteners behind the nosing, and every tread gets leveled with skim coat before the plank goes down. The result feels as solid as hardwood, without the upkeep.

Vinyl Flooring Stairs - frequently asked questions

Modern LVP is embossed with a low-slip texture rated for stair use - more slip-resistant than polyurethane-finished hardwood, comparable to LVT in commercial settings.

We pull the carpet, pad, staples, and tack strip first, then check each tread. Solid wood treads get a quick leveling pass before the LVP goes on; particleboard or damaged treads get swapped out.

Not when it's done right. We re-secure every tread and add construction adhesive before the plank goes down, which usually makes the staircase quieter than before we started.

With a matching nosing - either sourced from the LVP manufacturer or milled in-house from the same plank. We don't use a generic aluminum strip.
