Natural stone is about as beautiful a floor as you can install, and one of the least forgiving if it's done wrong. Every stone reacts differently to mortar, sealer, and the saw, and a poor stone installation shows up as a problem for decades. Artisan Custom Flooring has installed natural stone across The Denver Metro Area in marble, travertine, slate, limestone, and granite.
We source premium-grade stone from quarries we trust, and we'll steer clients away from bargain stone that's prone to spalling, pitting, or breaking down under foot traffic.
Choosing stone for the room
Every stone has its own strengths, and the right pick comes down to where it's going, how much traffic it sees, and how much upkeep you're willing to take on.
- Marble - a timeless, luxury look for bathrooms and feature areas, needs sealing and gentle cleaners
- Travertine - warm, earthy tones with some porosity, well suited to entries, sunrooms, and patios
- Slate - rugged and naturally slip-resistant, a strong fit for mudrooms, kitchens, and outdoor walkways
- Limestone - a soft, matte finish with a classic European feel, common in bathrooms and powder rooms
- Granite - the hardest stone we install, ideal for high-traffic floors and outdoor commercial use
Sealing, honing, and long-term care
Natural stone needs sealing at installation and a re-seal roughly every 1 to 3 years, and we'll give you the specific schedule for whatever stone you choose. We use premium impregnating sealers that don't alter the stone's color or finish - they simply block moisture and oil from soaking in.
Stone can also be re-honed or re-polished if it scratches or dulls over time. We're one of the few crews around The Denver Metro Area that handles on-site stone restoration, so the investment lasts the life of the home.

With the exception of dense granite, yes - every natural stone is porous enough to stain without a sealer. We seal on install day and recommend refreshing it every 1 to 3 years depending on traffic.
Honestly, marble etches from acidic liquids like lemon juice, vinegar, or wine. Plenty of homeowners like the patina that develops over time, but if you want it looking brand new indefinitely, a marble-look porcelain is the better call.
Absolutely - stone holds and conducts heat exceptionally well, making it one of the best materials for radiant heat. We install electric mat systems under most of our stone floors.
We keep records of every stone we install, including where it was sourced, so in most cases we can match the original for a single-tile replacement.
